Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Shara, who has been leading the transitional government since the fall of the Assad dictatorship late last year, has announced that he is discussing signing a security agreement with Israel.
According to the Jerusalem Post and the Times of Israel on the 13th (local time), President al-Shara said in an interview with Syrian state-run news agency SANA on the 12th that he is negotiating a plan to ease border tensions by signing a security agreement with Israel.
President al-Shara also said that he is negotiating a plan for the withdrawal of Israeli troops who occupied southern Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime last year.
On December 8th of last year, Israel, believing that the 1974 Disengagement Agreement with Syria had collapsed, deployed ground troops into the Golan Heights buffer zone, which had been under UN control for the first time in 50 years, and continues to occupy it to this day.
In relation to this, President al-Shara explained that he is discussing with Israel the possibility of returning to the 1974 agreement or concluding an agreement similar to it. He also emphasized that Syria does not want conflict with any country.
President al-Shara said, "Israel thought that Syria withdrew from the 1974 agreement with the collapse of the Assad regime, but we have declared our intention to abide by the agreement from the beginning. We are negotiating a security agreement with Israel to return Israel to the situation before December 8th."
The Syrian interim government, with US support, is focusing on stabilizing the country by improving relations with the West. US President Donald Trump is pursuing a plan to build peace in the Middle East by expanding the Abraham Accords, which he spearheaded during his first term.
The Abraham Accords are US-brokered agreements normalizing diplomatic relations between Israel and Arab countries. Israel, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Bahrain were the first to join in September 2020, followed by Sudan and Morocco early the following year. Syria and Lebanon are currently considered top candidates for establishing diplomatic relations with Israel.

But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us (2 Corinthians 4:7)
We hear that Ahmed al-Shara, the interim president of Syria leading the transitional government, is discussing the conclusion of a security agreement with Israel and negotiating the withdrawal of Israeli forces occupying the Golan Heights buffer zone.
Following the collapse of former President Assad's regime, which was once portrayed as part of the “axis of evil” alongside Iran for its anti-American and anti-Israel stance, the current Syrian Interim Government, supported by the United States, is seeking to stabilize the nation by improving relations with the West. We pray that the Lord will use Syria.
Surrounded by adversaries in the Palestinian Gaza Strip, Lebanon, and Yemen, may Israel negotiate with Syria. Through this, may Syrian refugees, weary from years of displacement, now find rest in their homeland. May the time they spent as refugees, hearing the Gospel, become a time of rest in Him.
May the Syrian church share the precious Word and testify to God's power, and may it strive to serve the brothers and sisters who have returned from refugee life.
May the global church also pray that the cooperation between Israel and Syria may prosper in the Holy Spirit, and that the churches in Syria may be rebuilt so that messengers of the Gospel may be sent forth.
Thus, may Syria once again be filled with the fame of Jesus, restoring the vision of the Arab High Priest, fulfilling the covenant of Isaiah chapter 19, and becoming a nation that takes the nations!
