[Today’s Prayer] The 'Arab Spring' is still far away... Tunisia, Qatar, etc. groasn for 14 years

The Arab Spring, a democratic movement that began with the Tunisian Revolution in late 2010 and spread throughout the Arab region, appears to be ending in failure after more than 10 years. Following coups and civil wars in Egypt, Libya, and Syria, even the democratic systems that had been piloted in monarchical countries are disappearing. Even Tunisia, once considered a model student of democracy, is being evaluated as having regressed to dictatorship.

In Tunisia, the birthplace of the Arab Spring, democratic institutions are collapsing due to the suppression of the opposition. In the presidential election held in Tunisia on the 6th, President Kais Saied was elected with 90.7% of the vote. The reason President Saied was elected with such an overwhelming vote is because all major opposition politicians are incarcerated.

Not only Qatar, Tunisia, and Kuwait, but most of the countries where the Arab Spring was active have already been occupied by military dictatorships or have been devastated by civil wars. A representative example is Libya. Since the ousting of Muhammar al-Gaddafi in the 2011 Libyan democracy movement, the country has been divided in two. The first and second civil wars ended with a ceasefire in 2020, but the Libyan government is still unable to function normally due to clashes between warlords in various places. The Syrian democracy movement also led to a civil war, which is still ongoing.

Egypt is in a situation where a military dictatorship has returned after a coup. In 2011, President Hosni Mubarak stepped down from power due to the democracy movement, and the following year, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, an Islamist party, was elected president. However, President Morsi's approval rating plummeted after his Islamic fundamentalist stance and an attempt to revise the constitution to strengthen the president's authority, and the military overthrew him through a coup. Since then, the coup’s mastermind, Field Marshal Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has taken over as president and remains in power.

For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he is taken out of the way. 8 And then the lawless one will be revealed, whom the Lord Jesus will overthrow with the breath of his mouth and destroy by the splendor of his coming (2 Thessalonians 2:7-8)

Amen, God, we hear that the decade-long “Arab Spring” has failed, and several Arab countries are now plagued by civil war and dictatorship. May God, the King of the Arab nations, stop all the forces operating in the secrets of lawlessness!

We trust that only You, Lord Jesus, will slay the spirit of the overflowing ones, and abolish lawlessness! Lord Jesus, come down and grant peace to the Arab nations, which are in turmoil!

May You rule and reign over the Arab nations, so that they may no longer be a land of pain and suffering, but Your Kingdom, rebuilt on the love of the Cross!

May all the youth of the Arab nations rise up as children who do Your Word and Your Will!

May the Arab world undergo a final revival and prepare the way for Your return!
