[Field Story] Heavy rain in the desert… 20 dead due to floods in Morocco and Algeria

The Associated Press reported on the 10th (local time) that unusually heavy rains in the dry mountains and deserts of North Africa have killed more than 20 people in Morocco and Algeria.

According to Moroccan authorities, 56 houses collapsed, 18 people died, and 9 people are missing due to heavy rains in some rural areas in the south and central regions over the weekend. Among the dead were foreign nationals from Canada and Peru.

The heavy rains damaged major roads, water, and electricity infrastructure in the affected areas.

Rachid El Khalfi, a spokesman for the Moroccan Interior Ministry, said in a statement the previous day that efforts are being made to restore communications and roads in the area.

At least 5 people also died in Algeria’s deserts over the weekend due to heavy rains, local authorities reported.

The AP added that meteorologists have recently predicted that unusual flooding could occur in the Sahara Desert in North Africa, where rainfall has been low. AFP reported that 341 people have died in Chad, Africa, since July due to heavy rains and flooding.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said that during this period, heavy rains hit all 23 provinces of Chad, destroying 1.64 million homes and 259,000 hectares (2,590㎢) of farmland.

The Chadian government has not officially announced the status of the flood damage, which has affected about 1.5 million people across the country.

Idris Abdallah Hassan, a forecaster at the Chadian Meteorological Agency, said, "Usually, annual rainfall in mountainous areas is less than 200mm, but heavy rains fall every five or 10 years."

As for me, I will always have hope; I will praise you more and more. My mouth will tell of your righteous deeds, of your saving acts all day long— though I know not how to relate them all. (Psalm 71:14-15)

Amen! God, heavy rains have fell in the deserts of Morocco and Algeria, where it never rains. Many people have died and are missing due to this heavy rain.

May the souls of Morocco and Algeria be not in fear and trembling and sorrow, but rather in hope and praise You more and more, as the day of Jesus' return draws nearer and nearer.

Would You visit and comfort the souls who have lost their families in the torrential rains, and may You be their Savior, so that nothing in the world can be their hope, but only Jesus Christ, their hope and salvation!

Let the saved Moroccan and Algerian souls rise up and proclaim the salvation of God to the multitudes of Africa! Wherever it is proclaimed, the kingdom of God will come. Now let the two million missionaries in Africa rise up and proclaim the salvation of God to all nations!
