[Today's Prayer] Macron: "We will push for recognition of Palestine as a state in June"

French President Emmanuel Macron said that France can recognize Palestine as a state in June.

In a pre-recorded interview with France 5 Channel that aired on the evening of the 9th (local time), President Macron announced his plan to host an international conference on recognition of Palestine in June in New York, USA, together with Saudi Arabia.

President Macron said, "We must move toward recognition (of the Palestinian state) and we will do so in the coming months," adding, "The goal is to host a conference with Saudi Arabia in June and finalize the mutual recognition process."

He continued, "We will do so not to please anyone, but because it is just."

President Macron also added, "Those who defend Palestine must also be able to recognize Israel," and "We must fight against those who deny Israel's right to exist, especially countries like Iran."

Palestinian Authority (PA) Foreign Minister Barsene Agabekian Shaheen told AFP that France's recognition of Palestine as a state is "a step in the right direction that is consistent with the protection of the rights of the Palestinian people and the two-state solution."

According to France Info, about 150 countries around the world currently recognize Palestine as a state.

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consistently rejects the "two-state solution" in which Israel and Palestine coexist as sovereign states, arguing that the establishment of a Palestinian state "threatens Israel's security."
