[Today's Prayer] 14 Soldiers Killed During Training in Kazakhstan… 5 Officers Arrested on Suspicion of Negligence

Fourteen soldiers were swept away by waves and killed during naval training along the Caspian Sea coast near Kazakhstan amid worsening weather conditions.

According to Reuters, dpa, and other outlets on the 25th (local time), 17 Kazakh soldiers who were training near the Mangystau Region along Kazakhstan’s western Caspian Sea coast were swept away by waves the previous day.

Fourteen people died in the accident, while the remaining three were rescued. One of the three survivors was transported to a hospital.

The Kazakh government explained that the accident was caused by a sudden deterioration in weather conditions and strong winds.

The soldiers were reportedly conducting combat training at the time of the accident, which occurred as they were disembarking from a patrol boat.

The Kazakh Ministry of Defense dispatched an investigation team to the site to investigate the circumstances of the accident and direct rescue operations.

The office of Kazakhstan’s president said that President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev instructed a government commission to “take all necessary measures to determine the circumstances of the accident.”

Accordingly, the Ministry of Internal Affairs announced that, one day after the accident, it had arrested five senior officers, including the commander of the navy’s First Command, on suspicion of negligence and violations of navigation regulations.

Kazakh investigative authorities are examining whether proper safety regulations were followed and whether the training was conducted with consideration for the weather conditions.

President Tokayev also declared that day a national day of mourning.

As sudden deterioration in weather conditions increasingly leads to tragic loss of life from one day to the next, may the people of Kazakhstan, all the more in such times, call out and cry to Jehovah God, who rules over heaven and earth.
