[Field Story] Tunnel collapses during construction in India…Rescuing to save the 40 trapped workers

Authorities began a rescue operation after a tunnel under construction collapsed in northern India, trapping workers.

According to the Associated Press on the 14th (local time), a portion of a tunnel under construction collapsed in Uttarakhand, Uttarakhand, northern India, trapping at least 40 workers, and the Indian Disaster Response Force (SDRF) is conducting rescue operations. Now in its third day of operation, authorities aim to rescue them within the next 24 hours.

An SDRF official said, "The collapsed part of the 4.5 km long tunnel was about 200 meters from the entrance," and added, "We will use hydraulic equipment to push a 76 cm wide pipe through the rubble to safely pull out the stranded workers."

Ranjit Sinha, an Indian government official, said, "The rescue operation is being hampered by debris falling from the upper part of the tunnel, but we will rescue all workers by the night of the 15th. All workers are in good health and relief supplies are being supplied through pipes."
