[Field News] WFP, more than half of population will experience food shortage in Myanmar this year

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) predicted in its recently published '2024 Global Report on Food Crisis' that the proportion of people in Myanmar, who will face food insecurity this year, will be more than 50%.

This is because the armed conflict and economic slump that have continued since the military coup three years ago, are becoming more serious. The number of people facing a serious food crisis is expected to increase around 20%, compared to the previous year.

It is predicted that 12.9 million people, equivalent to 23% of Myanmar's population, will fall into a state of 'acute food insecurity' or a more serious 'humanitarian crisis', which is the third level in the five-level comprehensive food security classification (IPC), between June and August of this year. When combined with the more severe 'food insecurity' (30% of the population), it’s totals is half.

As of September and October last year, the proportion of the population was Humanitarian crisis=2% Acute food insecurity=17% Food insecurity=30%. The number of people facing a humanitarian crisis this year is expected to increase from 1.4 million last year to 2.4 million.

The background to the food crisis is Refugee movement of the rural population due to ongoing conflict and political instability since the coup in February 2021, and a decrease in food production. A surge in food prices due to supply and poor logistics. Damages made by cyclone to the farmland.

Additionally, the report estimates that the population facing acute malnutrition is approximately 400,000 children under 5 years of age and approximately 30,000 pregnant women or breastfeeding women. Factors pointed out include food shortages and inadequate and unsanitary conditions in refugee camps.

If the Lord is pleased with us, he will lead us into that land, a land flowing with milk and honey, and will give it to us. (Numbers 14:8)

God, we hear desperate news that the three-year-old military coup will make more than 50% of people in Myanmar food insecurity this year.

We ask you to take pity on the Myanmar people, who are in a critical situation, where the number of people who will face a humanitarian crisis is expected to exceed more than 1 million, compared to last year.

Would you cover this nation with your mercy and blood, especially, make history among the government and rebels, so that the war may stop, and allow them the heart and eyes to look after and care for Myanmar's suffering and dying souls.

Also, pour out your love for this nation and the Holy Spirit to your churches, so that the global churches will be led to this nation, and inherit Myanmar to preach the gospel.

When the gospel spreads over the people of Myanmar, let famine, war, and death that covers the people, be broken by the power of the cross, and let only the glory of Jesus Christ's life, cover this nation.

So let the people of Myanmar rise to go to God’s land, where milk and honey will flow, and they will become holy people who will save the nations from the same suffering they experienced!
