Tunisia is a nation with the civilization of the Carthaginian Empire and the history and tradition of the Berber people. It also has the history of the Christian revival during the Roman era, the influence of the Arab Empire, and the identity of Islam. However, after being under French colonial rule for about 75 years from 1881, French humanistic ideology and secularism were introduced, and most Tunisians today are secular Muslims.
After the 2011 ‘Arab Spring’ Jasmine Revolution, the country’s order and traditional values collapsed, and especially the youth and young adult generation’s Islamic values were greatly shaken. They were exposed to drugs, media, pornography, money, and success, and many young people wanted to immigrate to Europe. Tunisian youth, whose faith as Muslims was shaken in this way, call themselves the ‘Lost Generation.’
Tunisia is a land with the history of the early church, including the martyrdoms in the catacombs and the Colosseum in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, and it was a land of revival to the point that 70% of the population was Christian in the 5th and 6th centuries AD. After the invasion of the Islamic Empire by General Uqba in the 7th century AD, Christianity collapsed and the land became Islamic, but the Lord is carrying out the history of the gospel in this land where the church collapsed for 1,400 years and became a spiritual desert.
“The least one shall become a clan, and the smallest one a mighty nation; I am the Lord; in its time I will hasten it. (Isaiah 60:22)
Amen! God is raising up the little ones and the weak in Tunisia and raising up a holy revival.
Sister N, a youth, came to believe in Jesus through student missionaries (SM) about 3 years ago, and after receiving constant discipling, she was baptized at the baptismal site of the early church last month. Sister N, a youth, evangelized to her friends in middle school, and two of them accepted Jesus. One of them is still worshiping with her and dreaming of a U-BTJ (school prayer group) at school. Sister N originally dreamed of going to Korea. However, now that she has become a young adult, she says she wants to become a student missionary to the nations like the young people who preached the gospel to her! Hallelujah! In addition, Sister R, a youth from S City, participated in the K Club (Korean Culture Class) meeting and had time to learn about Korea and hear the gospel. About two months ago, she first said she wanted to know Jesus, and she received the grace to accept Jesus. Sister R originally suffered from depression and was taking antidepressants, but after accepting Jesus, she stopped taking the antidepressants and became much brighter. Sister R says that the day she accepted Jesus was the happiest and most joyful day of her life. Sister R is still reading the Bible and growing!
“They shall build up the ancient ruins; they shall raise up the former devastations; they shall repair the ruined cities, the devastations of many generations. (Isaiah 61:4)
Amen! Through the revival of the youth and the next generation that will begin in Tunisia, a history of revival like the early church will begin in the midst of the fallen land of Tunisia! The Tunisian church will rise up and open the door of the gospel in Algeria and Libya, and will become the key to the revival that will raise up the army of Africa beyond the Sahara Desert!
[Today’s Prayer]
1. We have declared and started the ‘Ramadan Thousand People Evangelism Movement’ to evangelize 1,000 people during Ramadan!
Ramadan fasting is a period for Tunisian secular Muslims to return to Allah and confirm and solidify their Islamic identity. However, we proclaim that the lies and darkness of this land will collapse. May we meet those who are thirsting for the truth. Let everyone we meet rise up as witnesses of the gospel.
2. We pray that the fire of revival in the next generation and youth of Tunisia will be even more ignited.
