[Today’s Prayer] “Reuse of contaminated syringes”… 300 children in Pakistan infected with HIV in a mass outbreak

At a hospital in Pakistan, more than 300 children were found to have been collectively infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The cause was unhygienic medical practices, including the reuse of syringes.

According to a BBC report on the 14th, at a public hospital in Taunsa, Punjab Province, Pakistan, at least 331 children tested positive for HIV over the past year since November 2024. An investigation identified the reuse of contaminated syringes within the hospital as the main cause of the outbreak.

BBC’s investigation revealed shocking conditions in the hospital. Medical staff were seen reinserting used syringes into multi-dose vials to extract remaining liquid, or using a single syringe to administer injections to multiple children several times. It is believed that contaminated syringes turned the entire contents of the vial into a carrier of the virus, spreading the mass infection. An expert stated, “Even if the needle is changed, the virus can remain in the syringe barrel, making infection unavoidable.”

In fact, Muhammad Amin (8) died after suffering from a high fever shortly after being diagnosed with HIV, and his older sister (10) was also infected through the same route and will require lifelong treatment. The bereaved family demanded accountability for becoming victims of infection at a hospital they had visited for routine medical care.

This is not the first case of mass HIV infection in Pakistan. In Ratodero, Sindh Province in southern Pakistan, a total of 761 people, including 623 children aged 2 to 5, tested positive for HIV.

At that time as well, the incident was reported to have occurred due to a local doctor repeatedly using contaminated syringes. In rural villages of Pakistan, it is known that syringes are often reused due to economic reasons.

Lord, please have compassion on the injustice and sorrow of the more than 300 children and their families who suffered mass infection after visiting hospitals for routine treatment in Pakistan, and heal their bodies and hearts.

Let there be thorough hygiene oversight at the government level in Pakistan so that such tragic incidents—where contaminated syringes are reused due to economic reasons and lead to infection among children and residents—never happen again. May Pakistani doctors follow God’s goodness and mercy, not sell their conscience, and uphold basic standards of healthcare.

For this, may the church in Pakistan serve with God’s love and character so that the next generation in Pakistan may become key leaders of victory in the last days, firmly holding on to the fulfillment of God’s kingdom and the hope of heaven.

Also, open the way for medical missions from the global church so that no one in Pakistan loses their life due to a lack of medicine and medical resources. Improve the poor medical environment, and let the gospel of Christ and acts of service be abundantly provided alongside medical care.
