[Today’s Prayer] “Israeli forces begin seawater flooding of Hamas tunnels in Gaza”

The American daily Wall Street Journal (WSJ) reported on the 12th (local time) that the Israeli military, which is continuing its ground war in the Gaza Strip, has begun filling Hamas' underground tunnels with seawater to eliminate Palestinian militant group Hamas.

Israeli forces have been using seawater since last month in an effort to destroy Hamas' underground tunnels, according to a U.S. official briefed on Israel's military operations.

In addition to the five pumps installed last month, two more pumps were added to bring in seawater, and after several tests, began tunnel flooding operations. This is an operation to flood the tunnel and force Hamas leaders, members, and hostages underground to come to the surface.

Some predict that the operation of the pump could flood the tunnel within a few weeks, but controversy continues over the legitimacy and effectiveness of this operation.

WSJ previously reported on the 4th that the Israeli military installed a pump about 4km north of the Al Shati refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, and that one pump can draw thousands of cubic meters of seawater per hour from the Mediterranean Sea.

Destruction of the underground tunnel, which is estimated to be 500 km long, is a key goal of the Israeli military.

Israel believes that Hamas imports and stores weapons and military supplies through tunnels built throughout the Gaza Strip, and that its leaders set up an operation headquarters to direct attacks.

A spokesman for the Israeli Defense Minister declined to comment on the Hamas tunnel-related operation, saying it was classified.

Earlier, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Herzy Halevi positively evaluated the plan to pour seawater into Hamas' tunnels.
