Following the death of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a three-member provisional leadership council has been formed in accordance with the constitution, state-run IRNA news agency reported on the 1st (local time).

IRNA reported that under Article 111 of the Constitution, which stipulates the acting authority in the event of a Supreme Leader's vacancy, a three-member leadership council—consisting of President Masoud Pezeshkian, Judiciary Head Gholam-Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, and one Islamic law expert from the Guardian Council—will perform the duties and exercise the powers of the Supreme Leader during the transition period.

Former First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber, a close aide and advisor to Ayatollah Khamenei, also confirmed this information to the media.

According to the constitution, Iran's Assembly of Experts must elect the next Supreme Leader as quickly as possible.

Experts on Iran predict that rather than the institutionally formed provisional leadership council, former Vice President Mokhber, who was called "Khamenei's right hand," and Ali Larijani, the Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council currently overseeing military and security affairs, will hold actual power during this wartime situation.

The Iranian government officially confirmed yesterday that Mohammad Pakpour, commander-in-chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Ali Shamkhani, Khamenei's senior security advisor, were killed in airstrikes by the United States and Israel.
