[Today's Prayer] Houthis threaten retaliation against Israel for assassinating Prime Minister; appoint powerful leader as successor

Yemen's pro-Iran rebel group, the Houthis, threatened retaliation for the death of their prime minister in an Israeli airstrike and immediately nominated a powerful figure as the next prime minister.

According to Reuters, AFP, and dpa on the 30th (local time), the Houthis announced that Prime Minister Ahmed Ghalib Allawi and several ministers were killed in an Israeli attack during a meeting in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on the 28th.

Prime Minister Allawi is the highest-ranking official to have died in attacks during the Gaza war.

"Prime Minister Allawi and several of his cabinet colleagues were targeted and martyred by the vile criminals of Israel," the Houthis said, adding that "other colleagues were seriously injured and are receiving treatment."

The Israeli military also confirmed the death in a statement that day, saying, "Prime Minister Allawi was among those present at the scene at the time of the airstrike," and "He was eliminated along with other high-ranking officials."

The Houthis have threatened retaliation against Israel.

"I promise revenge to God, to the great Yemeni people and to the families of the martyrs and the wounded," Mahdi al-Mashat, chairman of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, said in a video posted on Telegram.

He also warned foreign companies operating in Israel to "leave Israel before it's too late."

In a statement by Defense Minister Mohammed al-Atifi, reported by the Houthi-run Sabah news agency shortly after the prime minister's death was confirmed, he also said he was "ready to confront Israel."
