[Today’s Prayer] 'Honor killing' for 'marrying into lower caste'… 4 Indians sentenced to death

Four men indicted on charges of so-called honor killings for murdering their sister and her husband for marrying a man from a lower caste in India and bringing shame to their family have been sentenced to death.

According to Indian media outlets such as the Indian Express on the 1st (local time), the Gadag district court in Karnataka, southern India, sentenced four men, including Sivapa Rathod, who were charged with murder and other charges, to death the previous day.

They were charged in January of the following year with beating their sister Gangamma Rathod (then 23) and her husband Ramesh Madar (29) to death with blunt objects in a village in Gadag district in November 2019.

According to police investigation, Gangamma fell in love with Madar, an untouchable from the same community, in 2015 and married him despite opposition from both families. She then lived in other parts of the state, including Bengaluru, Karnataka.

The couple, who have two children, had been married for nearly four years since 2019 and were expecting their families to recognize their marriage, so they went to their hometown to celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali, but were met with disaster.

It is estimated that around 5,000 women are killed each year around the world due to so-called honor killings, committed by family members for bringing shame to the family. About a third of these victims are said to be from India and Pakistan.

Honor killings occur mainly in South Asia, including India, the Middle East, and North Africa. However, many cases go unreported, and it is estimated that there are actually about 20,000 cases worldwide each year.

But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Rome 5:8)

God, we hear the sad news that in India, four men who were brothers have been charged with murder and sentenced to death in an honor killing because their sister married a man lower in the caste system.

God, we ask You have pity on the Indian people, who are dark and sinful, where even marriages made in love are not blessed and lives are taken because of man-made caste systems and evil customs.

You are a Lord of justice who loves all people without discrimination; please grant the families of the victims the grace of that love to comfort and heal their hearts.

May the love of the cross of Jesus Christ be proclaimed among the people of India, where so many honor killings occur every year. Lord, who loved us while we were yet sinners, may the people of India come to know the unconditional love and grace of Jesus Christ. May every home in India be transformed by the love of Jesus Christ.

May the power of violence and death in the name of honor be broken among the Indian people, and may the family be restored in truth.

For this cause, raise up the Church in India and the global Church to bring Your gospel to every part of India. Grant that through the Church the Gospel may reach every part of India and that all the peoples of India may be granted the grace to come to You with the Gospel!

So that the Church in India may move forward with the Gospel and see the vision of one million missionaries in India fulfilled, not only in each region but in every nation!

Raise up a holy India of one million missionaries to bring all nations back to You with the Gospel!
