Sudan, Africa, engulfed in a 28-month civil war, is experiencing a cholera outbreak, with the death toll exceeding 2,000 over the past year.
According to AFP on the 14th (local time), Doctors Without Borders (MSF) announced in a statement that 2,470 people had died from cholera in the past year as of the 11th, with 99,700 suspected cases.
MSF stated, "The western region, which has become the main battlefield, has been hit hardest by the cholera epidemic that began a year ago," adding, "In the Darfur region alone, we treated more than 2,300 patients and 40 died in the past week."
Sylvain Penicourt, MSF coordinator for Tawila, near Al-Fashir, the capital of North Darfur, said, "In the refugee camps, displaced people are forced to drink from contaminated water sources, leading to many contracting cholera."
Cholera is an infectious disease characterized by diarrhea and often vomiting, spread by contaminated water or food with the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. While it can be treated with early intervention, including intravenous fluids, it can lead to dehydration and other deaths if left untreated.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Sudan's already fragile healthcare system has been strained by more than two years of civil war.
The local medical association stated that up to 90% of Sudan's hospitals have been forced to close due to fighting, and even those that remain operational are regularly bombed and looted.
Since independence in 1956, Sudan has experienced frequent civil wars and political instability, with ongoing civil wars between government forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) rebels.

The conflict between the two sides has resulted in over 20,000 deaths across Sudan, and over 13 million people have fled their homes, creating the world's largest refugee and humanitarian crisis.

Thus says the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel: "You have seen all the disaster I brought on Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah. Look! Today they are a desolation, without inhabitant, because of the evil they did, provoking me to anger by going out to burn incense and serve other gods—gods whom neither they nor you nor your fathers knew." (Jeremiah 44:2-3)
We hear the sad news that in Sudan, where civil war has continued for 28 months and the country remains unstable, cholera has spread, with the death toll exceeding 2,000 in one year.
Lord, have mercy on the souls of Sudanese who, not only have lost their homes to war, but are also teetering on the brink of death from cholera after drinking contaminated water in refugee camps.
Due to the civil war, up to 90% of Sudanese hospitals have been forced to close, and even those that were operating have been bombed and looted, leaving them unable to provide care. May the global church serve Sudan with the gift of healing and dispatch medical teams so that even one more life may hear the Gospel.
Above all, may the civil war be swiftly brought to a close, and may the Sudanese church and the Arab-African church unite to guide the Sudanese leadership in the right path. May they wisely teach that there is no governance without the people, and may the value of life, more important than territory, be instilled in Sudan.
May all disasters cease through those who serve Jesus Christ in the barren land of Sudan, and may it become a land flowing with milk and honey by the power of God.
So, may the reign of Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, come upon all of Africa through the Sudanese people, and may a revival of African missions serving the nations arise again!
