[Today's Prayer] Peace Agreement Reached Under Pressure from Trump... But Tensions Rise Again Between Israel and Lebanon

Although Israel and Lebanon signed a preliminary peace agreement through U.S. mediation, opposition has emerged on both sides, creating an atmosphere in which the agreement is effectively being undermined.

While Israel maintains that its conflict with Lebanon is separate from the ceasefire with Iran, despite U.S. demands to halt the fighting in Lebanon, opposition is also growing within Lebanon, particularly among the pro-Iranian armed group Hezbollah. As a result, concerns are increasing over the possibility of renewed armed conflict within Lebanon.

According to CNN on June 29 (local time), Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, who is considered part of Israel's far-right camp, said during a press conference that it was "regrettable" that the war with Iran and the conflict in Lebanon had become strategically linked.

He stated, "Linking the two conflicts served America's interests. The United States was eager to advance the possibility of negotiations with Iran and viewed the situation in Lebanon as an obstacle."

He also reiterated, "Israel will not completely withdraw from Lebanon until Hezbollah is disarmed."

Israel considers the situation in southern Lebanon to be directly tied to its national security.

Even after the United States and Iran reportedly agreed to a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that included ending the Lebanon conflict, Israel has continued conducting its own military operations.

In particular, as U.S. President Donald Trump strongly urged Israel to halt its attacks on Lebanon, dissatisfaction within Israel intensified, giving greater influence to hardline voices.

Meanwhile, strong opposition has also emerged in Lebanon regarding the agreement.

Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri said in an interview, "This agreement will not be implemented," warning that it "risks deepening internal divisions and driving the Lebanese people into conflict."

The Amal Movement, the Shiite political party led by Berri, also released a statement criticizing the agreement as "an unbalanced deal that sacrifices Lebanon's national interests," arguing that several provisions unfairly favor Israel.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem likewise condemned the agreement as "a grave mistake," warning that it could eventually lead to Israel annexing Lebanese territory.

Differences between Hezbollah, one of Lebanon's most powerful political and military forces, and the Lebanese government, which led the negotiations, have further heightened tensions.

As a result, there are growing concerns that if the Lebanese government attempts to implement the agreement by confronting Hezbollah militarily, the country could descend into civil war.

The Financial Times reported that analysts believe Lebanon may face internal armed conflict as the government increasingly confronts Hezbollah.

In fact, immediately after the agreement was signed, Hezbollah supporters burned tires and blocked major roads in Beirut. Waving Hezbollah and Iranian flags, groups of motorcyclists rode through the city in protest.

Previously, on June 26, the United States successfully brokered a preliminary peace agreement between Israel and Lebanon in an effort to end hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.

"I will tell of the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD has bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which He has granted them according to His compassion and according to the abundance of His lovingkindnesses. For He said, 'Surely they are My people, children who will not deal falsely.' So He became their Savior." (Isaiah 63:7–8)

God, we hear that although Israel and Lebanon have signed a peace agreement through the mediation of the United States, tensions are flaring again because of strong internal opposition on both sides.

Lord, have mercy on those who continue to suffer because they do not know the truth and are unable to put an end to conflict. Pour out Your grace upon them, intervene in every circumstance, resolve the conflict between Israel and Lebanon, and bring both peoples into everlasting unity through the cross alone.

As criticism of the agreement grows within Lebanon and military tensions between the government and Hezbollah raise fears of civil war, may Your true shalom, which alone brings every conflict to an end, come upon Lebanon. Deliver its people from every chain of sin and death so that they may truly worship Jesus Christ.

Set Israel and Lebanon free through the cross from their captivity to death amid ongoing war. Be their one and only Savior, and make them peoples who are called God's holy people and His children.

We also pray that the global Church and the Church in Lebanon would unite in prayer so that the peoples of Israel and Lebanon may become one in Christ. May all division and suffering throughout the Arab world and among the nations come to an end, and may joyful songs of praise resound as believers proclaim the gospel of the cross and serve together.

May Israel and Lebanon worship Yeshua, the only Savior, and become nations that unite all peoples through the power of the cross. Amen.
