[Today's Prayer] Pakistan issues flood warning for southern region as nearly 300 dead and 150 missing in northwest

With hundreds dead in severe flooding in the northwest last week and rescuers continuing to search for missing people, Pakistan issued a flood warning for parts of the south on the 20th.

The southern region, where the new flood warning was issued, was hit by the devastating climate-related floods of 2022 that killed thousands.

Pakistan's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) warned that up to 100 millimeters of rainfall is expected in the next 24 hours, potentially flooding highways in Karachi, Hyderabad, Thatta, Badin, Mirpur Khas, and Sukkur in southern Sindh province, disrupting traffic and damaging power and communications networks.

The Disaster Management Agency reported that at least 41 people have died nationwide in rain-related incidents in the past 24 hours. Most of the deaths occurred in the northern Gilgit-Baltistan region and in Karachi, where torrential rains on the 19th flooded streets and disrupted daily life. Schools in Karachi remain closed.

At least 746 people have died since June 26th in Pakistan, as heavy rainfall continues to batter the country.

Meanwhile, rescuers in the northwest continue their grim search for nearly 150 people missing in the Buner district, where floodwaters carrying huge rocks and mudslides swept through villages, destroyed homes, and left behind piles of debris. With the help of military sniffer dogs, search teams are recovering more bodies from the rubble as anxious relatives watch.

Mohammad Suhail, a spokesman for the emergency services, said the death toll in Buner has risen to 290 after more bodies were recovered. He said rescuers provided tents, blankets, cooking utensils, ready-to-eat meals, and clean drinking water to the area while others worked to restore power in the devastated area. Most of Buner's damaged roads have also been reopened.

Meanwhile, many residents criticized the government for failing to issue an early warning.

Save your people and bless your inheritance. Be their shepherd and guide them forever (Psalm 28:9)

God, we hear that hundreds of people have died and are missing due to torrential rains in the northwestern region of Pakistan last week, and that new flood warnings have been issued for the southern region.

Lord, please be with the village of Buner in the northwestern region, where sudden torrential rains have swept through the village, killing countless people and causing grief as the search continues for nearly 150 missing people.

With 41 people dead in Karachi and schools closed, may the Lord's mercy be upon the children and youth of Pakistan who have been robbed of their educational opportunities.

May the Pakistani people, blinded by their faith in Islam and turning away from the Father of Truth, repent and seek the Lord. May the gospel be spread so that, through the compassionate hand of the Lord, they may be saved and return to Him as His children, fearing Him.

May the global church, especially in times like these, spread the gospel and provide relief supplies to the 400 unreached people groups in Pakistan. May they share Pakistan's sorrow with prayer and love.

May the Pakistani church also comfort the souls who have lost their families in this incident and join in rebuilding the destroyed homes. May the Lord bless them so that they may boldly proclaim Jesus Christ, their Shepherd, to the lost and wandering Pakistani people!

Thus, may the Pakistani people become a victorious army of the gospel, embracing the spirit of martyrdom in all circumstances!
