(Geneva = Yonhap News) Correspondent Ahn Hee = At least 40 civilians were killed in an attack by an armed group linked to Islamic radicals in Burkina Faso, West Africa, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) reported on the 28th (local time).

According to OHCHR, on the 26th, an armed attack by jihadists, classified as Islamic radicals, took place in a village in northern Burkina Faso, and more than 40 civilians were killed and 42 were injured.

The militants reportedly carried out the raid to attack the Burkina Faso government military contingent stationed in the village.

One source told AFP, "More than 3,000 jihadists were repelled while trying to infiltrate the detachment base. The fighting lasted for more than three hours, and more than 400 militants were killed."

Burkina Faso is considered one of the most unstable countries in the world, with 40% of its territory outside government control. Attacks by Islamist organizations have been frequent since 2015, resulting in thousands of deaths and more than 2 million refugees until recently.

After two coups last year, a military government headed by Army Captain Ibrahim Traore came into power in September, but the unstable situation has not improved.

The military government plans to hold an election for the transfer to civilian administration by July next year, but it is unclear whether this will actually be implemented.
