[Today’s Prayer] Amid a Middle East–triggered crisis, China steps in to mediate the Afghanistan–Pakistan conflict

The Taliban government of Afghanistan announced that Pakistan and Afghanistan held peace talks mediated by China to end border clashes and achieved “useful progress.” As Qatar, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia—who had previously attempted to mediate between the two countries—became entangled in the recent war involving the United States, Israel, and Iran, China, which shares a border with the region, appears to have emerged as a key mediator in resolving the situation.

According to AP and Reuters on the 8th (local time), Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi met with China’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Zhao Xing, and released a statement saying that “constructive and useful discussions have taken place so far” at the talks held in Urumqi, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, China. Muttaqi expressed hope that “minor differences in interpretation will not hinder the progress of the talks,” and conveyed gratitude to China, which arranged the meeting, as well as to Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which had previously made mediation efforts. Mid-level delegations from both countries have been continuing negotiations in Urumqi since the 1st to achieve a ceasefire.

Behind China’s active mediation are its own security and economic interests. China shares a border with Afghanistan through the Wakhan Corridor and is wary that instability in the conflict region could spread to the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. In fact, during talks between Chinese envoy Yue and Pakistani envoy Sadiq, the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM) were discussed as common threats to both countries. Additionally, securing the safety of large-scale regional investment projects such as the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and Chinese personnel residing in the area are also key considerations.

Despite progress in the talks, tensions between the two countries remain. Pakistan’s military leadership, led by Army Chief Asim Munir, held a meeting the same day and maintained a hardline stance, stating, “We will continue counterterrorism operations without exception until terrorist strongholds are eliminated and the use of Afghan territory to target Pakistan is decisively ended.” The Afghan side claimed that Pakistan carried out cross-border shelling during the talks, resulting in civilian casualties, but Pakistani authorities did not provide any comment.

The armed conflict between the two countries, which intensified in earnest since October last year, has caused a severe humanitarian crisis. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that the conflict has displaced a total of 94,000 people, and since February, 100,000 residents in two areas near the border have been completely isolated. After a ceasefire mediated by Qatar in October last year broke down, Afghanistan launched retaliatory attacks in February following Pakistani airstrikes, escalating into full-scale fighting. Pakistan effectively declared war on Afghanistan and carried out airstrikes within Afghan territory, including the capital Kabul.

In particular, on the 17th of last month, a Pakistani airstrike destroyed a drug rehabilitation facility in Kabul, and Afghan authorities reported that more than 400 people were killed. Pakistan denied civilian casualties, stating that it had conducted “precision strikes on military facilities and terrorist support infrastructure.”

You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore (Psalm 16:11)

Lord, we hear the news that Pakistan and Afghanistan, where civilian suffering has not ceased due to continued full-scale fighting despite a temporary ceasefire mediated by Qatar following the deadly border clashes last October, have now held peace talks mediated by China to end their armed conflict.

As Pakistan maintains its stance of continuing counterterrorism operations, O God, sovereign over all things, we entrust the talks between Afghanistan and Pakistan to You.

May You, O God, grant wisdom and intervene powerfully through China’s active mediation, guiding the governments of Pakistan and Afghanistan, and may Your kingdom come upon these nations.

For the souls in Pakistan and Afghanistan who cannot find rest due to ongoing conflict, show them the path of life and fill them with the joy and gladness that come through Jesus, who sits at Your right hand.

May the blood of the churches and the seeds of the gospel sown in Afghanistan and Pakistan bear fruit thirty, sixty, and a hundredfold, and may the prayers and service of the global church continue for this purpose.

And now, may Afghanistan and Pakistan rise as the final instrument of the gospel, united in the love of the cross and obedient to the kingdom of God.
