[Field News] “Blasphemy”… Pakistani man dies after being assaulted by crowd

In Pakistan, a Muslim-majority country, a man who was being held in a police station on suspicion of damaging the Islamic holy book, the Quran, was killed by an invading crowd, local daily Dawn reported.

This man suffered such a tragedy in Maidan town, northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

He was staying at the hotel as an out-of-town tourist and was arrested by the crowd on suspicion of damaging the Quran, and was taken to the police station due to police intervention.

The angry crowd then rushed to the police station, set it on fire, dragged the man out, beat him to death with a club, and then set his body on fire, police said.

It is reported that eight people were injured in the process.

Regarding this incident, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provincial government ordered the police to control the situation and asked the crowd to refrain. It is not known whether the suspects involved in the incident have been arrested.

In Pakistan, blasphemy, such as damaging the Quran, is punishable by death or life imprisonment. In particular, just the suspicion of blasphemy can result in a group beating.

In this regard, human rights groups pointed out that it is often used as a means to intimidate religious minorities or resolve personal grudges.

Last month, a Christian man was attacked by a crowd in the eastern province of Punjab after he was accused of damaging the Quran. He was subsequently admitted to hospital but died a few days later.

Father, please forgive them. Have mercy and take pity on those who do not even know what sin they are committing.

Not truly knowing the Father, they ignore the name of Jesus, worship idols, and even murder people with their vain logic. Please forgive their ruthlessness.

To the people that are dying in scorched places, may you satisfy them and make their bones strong.

Please cover them with Your precious blood and give them eternal life.

Lord, come quickly and help them to rise up as a nation that saves lives!

May your Holy Spirit come upon this withering and dying people!
