Ramadan 2014. 6.28 – 7.27
Of the 7 billion people on planet Earth, 1.7 billion are Muslim, and Islam is one of the last remaining strongholds for world evangelization. As part of their religion, one month out of the year is dedicated for an obligation. This is Ramadan.
In Islam, the month of September is called “Ramadan.” It is considered the sacred month that the founder of Islam, Mohammad, received the Quran from an angel. Every year for this entire month, 1.7 billion Muslims from all over the world fast together. Fasting lasts from sunrise to sunset and all food and drink is prohibited. For this reason, the most devoted Muslims don’t even swallow their own saliva.
Quran Baqara 2:183-185 “O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, that you may become righteous, for a specified number of days. But whoever among you is sick, or on a journey, then a number of other days are to be made up. For those who are able: a ransom of feeding a needy person. But whoever volunteers goodness, it is better for him. But to fast is best for you, if you only knew.”
During Ramadan, those who are on a journey, who are sick, who are children, or who are pregnant are exempt, but afterwards, they must make up for the days they have missed on their own. Those who break their fast must fast for 60 days in the way of Ramadan and must feed 60 hungry people. In Saudi Arabia, even those who are against the Islam religion must adhere to these rules in markets, streets or offices, or they can face suspension or deportation as punishment.
Through Ramadan fasting, each looks to atone for their sins, control their evil thoughts, believe that they are earning a way to Heaven, and believe they are bringing “upward adjustment” to their spiritual life. They believe if they do an act of kindness during this period, they will be rewarded 70 fold. They read and study the Quran and pray longer than usual to focus more on their spiritual life. Therefore, through intercession from the body of Christ, we have the power to shine and bring freedom to their lives. During this time, there are actually more and more Muslims who meet and receive Jesus Christ.
