[Field Story] “25% of Iraqis Live Below Poverty Line” according to Iraqi Government

The Iraqi government announced on January 6th (local time) that the country’s poverty rate reached 25% or about 11 million people in 2022. The reason for the high poverty rate includes repercussions of the Coronavirus pandemic and the economic crisis that resulted from the drop in oil prices internationally.

The Iraqi Government has supported those affected by the level of poverty in Iraq by raising some salaries and by improving the system for ration cards. However, Iraq faces significant challenges including problems in the political and security sectors, economic instability, social unrest caused by high employment and eroded public services, and persistent low stand of living.

“And on that day they offered great sacrifices, rejoicing because God had given them great joy. The women and children also rejoiced. The sound of rejoicing in Jerusalem could be heard far away.” (Nehemiah 12:43)

Our God loves Iraq. Let us remember the people of Iraq, who are still living with unresolved war and economic instability. The current Iraqi government is doing its best to solve the poverty crisis, but we believe that what they need is Jesus and the Gospel.

May the Lord, who hears the voice of the needy and does not despise the prisoner, fill all their needs and shine the light of truth. Lord, help the Iraqis to believe that only Jesus is the Savior and the Truth.

Let the Iraqis rise as holy people of God who follow the path of the cross of Jesus with such joy despite their wounds and pain. Let Iraq be a nation that hopes only in the Lord and gains the inheritances of the eternal kingdom of God.

Jesus, let the holy revival come to this land, and may the sound of praise for arise throughout Iraq. Let his revival of Iraq rise together with all nations until the day the Lord returns! Amen!
