[Today’s Prayer] Kazakhstan: Anti-Government Protests Suppressed, but Authorities Claim “Foreign Terrorists Attempted a Coup”

Local authorities announced on January 10th that the large-scale unrest in Kazakhstan in Central Asia, which has been going on since January 2nd, has been stabilized.

However, in Almaty, the largest city, where the bloodiest clashes between large-scale protesters and riot police took place, the government has claimed that “counter-terrorism operations” are still ongoing.

Kazakhstan authorities believe that the protests were led by extremist organizations both at home and abroad, and the Kazakh government has mobilized the military and police to carry out counter-terrorism operations to eradicate “foreign terrorists.”

Kazakh President Kassim-Jomart Tokayev at a Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) video summit described the incident as an “attempt at a coup” by armed rebels, insisting that their ultimate goal was to destroy the constitutional order and collapse the government system.

“It can be said with certainty that terrorists, including foreign militants, were directly involved in the uprising,” he said. “They tried to seize weapons and military equipment and acted very cruelly, including the beheading of two Kazakh soldiers.”

Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also said in a statement on the same day, “Members of Islamic extremist organizations with experience in fighting in conflict zones participated in this unrest. It appears that they have used the current circumstances around the nation to elevate anxiety and incite violence.”

The local Ministry of Internal Affairs said that as of that day (January 10th), 7,939 people have been arrested for taking part in the unrest across the country, and that most of those arrested are foreigners.

Sputnik, a Russian state-owned news agency, citing the local Ministry of Health, reported that 164 people had been killed by the end of the protests, and 103 were killed in Almaty alone. It appears to include both protesters and military and police casualties.

but He whom God raised up saw no corruption. Therefore let it be known to you, brethren, that through this Man is preached to you the forgiveness of sins; and by Him everyone who believes is justified from all things from which you could not be justified by the law of Moses.
(Acts 13:37-39 NKJV)

God, we’ve heard that in Kazakhstan, despite the protests being stabilized, counter-terrorism operations are apparently ongoing. The government has also announced that 164 people have died in the protests.

Lord, would You comfort the hearts of the Kazakh people who have been hurt through what has happened in their land.

When God brings His presence, people do not die but receive new life. Lord, we believe in You. God, meet the dying people of Kazakhstan, that they would no longer live for the world but for Jesus Christ alone.

May the gospel of Jesus Christ be preached to the many in Kazakhstan who are willing to give up their lives for the fleeting things of this world, and also to the terrorists who are deceiving and killing people, thinking it will earn them salvation.

During these times, when the whole world is in chaos from pandemics, uprisings, sin, and death, let Your church, Your body, rise up with the faith in Jesus Christ that gives people righteousness.

Let the Kazakh church also rise up to preach the gospel of Jesus, who delivers people from their sins and leads them to true eternal life, to all of Central Asia and all nations! Let life be proclaimed to many through the lips of the Kazakh church together with the global church! Amen!
