Despite ongoing peace negotiations between the Afghan government and the armed rebel group the Taliban, claims from the Afghan government have been made that hundreds of civilians and soldiers have been killed or injured in Taliban attacks over the past two weeks.
On October 14th, Afghan Interior Ministry spokesman Tareq Aryan said, “In the past 15 days, the Taliban killed or injured 251 people,” according to newspaper the Afghanistan Times. Aryan added, “The Taliban carried out 575 offensives, including six suicide attacks, in just this year alone.”
In particular, the southern Helmand province, where one offense was actively launched, suffered substantial collateral damage.
Accordingly, the US military has also joined in with airstrikes to support government forces. Local media reported that tens of thousands of Helmand residents left their homes due to the large-scale battling.
Afghan civilians are suffering from both the Taliban’s attacks and by US airstrikes and Afghan government forces. According to a report by the UN Afghanistan Support Group, 3,458 civilian casualties occurred in the first half of this year, of which as much as 42% were attributed to indiscriminate attacks, such as airstrikes carried out by pro-government forces.

13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,
And He saved them out of their distresses.
14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death,
And broke their chains in pieces.
(Psalm 107:13-14, NKJV)
Our Lord saves us from our distresses and brings us out of darkness and the shadow of death. Only Jesus Christ can save the Afghan people from this seemingly endless war between Afghanistan and the Taliban!
Our Lord mourns for the distresses of the Afghan people. May the global church also mourn for, pray for, and serve this nation.
Praise the Lord who will wipe away all tears from Afghanistan and give them eternal life! Lord, please save them out of their distresses! Amen!
