[Today’s Prayer] Russian Orthodox Church Attempts to Install Murals of Stalin and Putin in a $100 Million Chapel

Russia’s third-largest chapel and the most recent building of modern Russian church architecture with the highest budget, Resurrection of Christ Church, tried to install murals and mosaics commemorating politicians such as Stalin and Putin recently. The Voice of the Martyrs Korea (VoMK) recently revealed that the project was canceled.

According to VoMK, the church was originally supposed to open on May 9th to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the victory of Russia in World War II, but was postponed due to COVID-19 concerns. Recently, the church tried to display pictures depicting famous Russian politicians like the late Joseph Stalin, current President Vladimir Putin, and other officials, but it became controversial. Eventually, paintings of politicians were replaced by banners with a triumphant motto and traditional mosaic pictures of religious subjects.

Located in Kubinka, a city near Russia’s capital of Moscow, the church was designed by the bishop of the Armed Forces and can accommodate over 6,000 people. 6 billion rubles (about 80 million USD) was spent on this building, making it the highest budget church among modern Russian church buildings. It has military-style symbols, military colors, and a missile-like spire. President Leonid Kalinin, President of the Church Art Professionals Association and Chairman of the Russian Orthodox Church Architecture and Restoration Committee, spoke favorably on the matter, and the General of the Russian Ministry of Defense Andrei Kartapolov commented, “Stalin restored Russian religion.”

In response, VoMK said, “It is Stalin who was instructed to destroy the Cathedral of Christ the Savior, which was built not far from this new chapel in December 1931, 89 years ago. The comments from the Russian managers who were present at the prayer meeting are concerning.”

“It is estimated that between 12 million and 20 million Christians were murdered by the Soviet regime,” VoMK said. “The nation often uses buildings to foster a sense of nationality based on a history of military victory. We need to raise our voices so that new generations can learn that Christian martyrs overcame Stalin and communism, which were clearly adversaries to Christianity.”

VoMK also says, “The founder of VoM, Romanian pastor Richard Wurmbrand, who spent 14 years in a prison in Romania under communism, said, “We beat communism with love. When Soviet communism collapsed, the Christian martyr’s victory is best remembered through a book of martyrs’ lives, not a gift from the church.”

“Tortured for Christ” is a global bestseller novel translated in more than 60 languages, documenting the stories of Pastor Wurmbrand and other Christians who were persecuted under communism. “Marx and Satan” is also a best-selling book of VoMK. This book documents evidence of the connection between communism and Satanism.

VoMK said, “Pastor Wurmbrand passed away in 2001, but if he were alive today, he would have expressed serious concern about the chapel’s efforts to elevate Stalin. He would send a warm, friendly letter to the chief priest of Kalinin and General Cartapolov along with the two books mentioned earlier, and he would have proposed to publicly discuss and examine the statement that “Stalin restored Russian religion.”

He added, “Pastor Wurmbrand would remind us that we overcome communism with love and urge us to share the two books for free in the new chapel, remembering the millions of Christians murdered by the communist regime.”

Nevertheless, with most of them God was not pleased, for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
(1 Corinthians 10:5)

Amen! We lift up the Russian church of God. We desire that Your believers will be set free from everything that blindfolds them and clouds their perspective of the Truth.

As many forefathers of the faith were martyred, may the Russian church now go down that path as well. May all things that have been exalted against God come to obey Christ!

So, Lord, please wake up the Russian church once again to live only for Jesus and the gospel! We pray that the Holy Spirit will lead the Russian church to come before Christ once again! Help the Russian church become a church that follows and glorifies Christ Jesus alone! Amen!
