[Today's Prayer] Will Sinwar's Death lead to Ceasefire?... Israel and Hamas Dispatch Delegations
As Israel and the Palestinian armed group Hamas have begun contacting mediators for ceasefire negotiations, there are signs that the long-deadlocked Gaza Strip ceasefire discussions will resume.
Since the assassination of Yahya Sinwar, a hardliner who led Hamas, by the Israeli military on the 16th, there have been changes in the atmosphere surrounding the negotiation table.
According to reports from the Times of Israel and other sources on the 24th (local time), the Israeli Prime Minister's Office announced that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had instructed David Barnia, the director of the foreign intelligence agency Mossad, to travel to Doha, Qatar, and push for hostage release negotiations.
Barnia is scheduled to meet with CIA Director William Burns and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani in Doha.
The Prime Minister's Office explained, "The participants will discuss various options to resume negotiations to release the hostages held by Hamas, depending on the recent situation."
The Prime Minister's Office added that Prime Minister Netanyahu "welcomes Egypt's willingness to pursue negotiations to release the hostages."
Earlier that day, Reuters reported that the Egyptian delegation met with Hamas in Cairo to resume ceasefire negotiations, citing Egypt's state-run Al Qahira TV. Hamas also said that it "discussed a ceasefire proposal with Egypt," AFP reported.
In relation to this, U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken, who is on a tour of the Middle East, said in a joint press conference after meeting with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani that mediators would meet within a few days to resume negotiations.
Secretary Blinken plans to meet with Arab foreign ministers in London on the 25th to discuss the situation in Gaza and Lebanon, US State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller said on the 23rd.

The US, Qatar, Egypt, and others have been trying to mediate the resumption of the ceasefire since the temporary ceasefire reached in November of last year ended after only a week, but discussions on the matter were effectively halted when Sinwar was elected as the successor to Ismail Haniyeh, who was assassinated in Iran in July.
However, with the death of Sinwar, who designed and led the Israeli surprise attack on October 7 of last year and was the Israeli military's "number one target," there are speculations that negotiations may proceed more smoothly in the future.
