[Today’s Prayer] “The Nicaraguan government must immediately stop suppressing Christian organizations”

ree

A Christian human rights group has raised its voice in criticism as the Nicaraguan government has revoked the legal status of numerous organizations .

According to the UK’s Christian Today (CT), Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) recently criticized the Nicaraguan government for revoking the legal status of 1,600 organizations and asked for the attention and help of the international community.

About a third of the organizations whose legal status was revoked by were religious groups, and were either Roman Catholic or Protestant.

Not only did this affect the operations of these groups, but some employees who were legally living on the premises of these groups suddenly lost their homes.

A source who requested anonymity told CSW, “We knew that before we could take out all our belongings, when the police arrived, they would take everything, even our clothes.”

“This is a time of distress and uncertainty for thousands of Nicaraguans who have actively participated in the work of NGOs,” he said. “Some are considering their options in case they have the possibility of an appeal, but there is no clear understanding of whether they will be able to continue operating.”

Since 2018, more than 5,000 organizations have lost their legal status in Nicaragua, hundreds of which were Christian-related.

“The Nicaraguan government is ‘vindictive’ and has arbitrarily revoked legal status. Unfortunately, this news is not surprising,” said Anna Lee Stangl, CSW’s chief legal officer. “This will have far-reaching consequences.”

In addition, he said, “We support those who sacrificed their lives to improve their communities because of their religious beliefs, but who can only watch as a vindictive government that focuses only on its own interests takes everything away,” and “The international community must make it clear to the Nicaraguan government that the deprivation of legal status for independent civil society cannot be tolerated and must stop immediately.”

But now, Lord, what do I look for? My hope is in you. (Psalm 39:7)

Amen! We hear that Christian groups in Nicaragua are persecuted by the government for doing good deeds.

Amid all this persecution, may the Christians who serve this land place their hope only in you!

God, Nicaragua belongs to you. May you alone rule and govern this land!

Forgive the sins of the government that only thinks of its own interests and renew them with your holiness!

The world treats your people unjustly, but let them look to the kingdom of God and hold on to the Lord who will ultimately triumph over all this injustice with good!

We believe that you accept all their service and tears.

Through their devotion and prayers, may the people of Nicaragua return to the Lord and the kingdom of God come to Nicaragua!

By staying faithful to you, may the devoted soldiers of the Lord in Central and South America and the nations rise up and prepare the way for the Lord's coming!
