[Today’s Prayer] "The AI onslaught has begun." Tech companies around the world are laying off employees at a rapid pace, accelerating this year.

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to make groundbreaking progress, the shadow of restructuring is looming large, especially among big tech companies. Last month, the US AI company Antropic launched its AI tool, "Claude Cowork," raising concerns that general-purpose AI tools will replace expensive enterprise software (SW).

According to "Layoffs.fyi," a site tracking tech company restructuring, a total of 24,818 employees were laid off across 27 tech companies worldwide last month. This represents a tenfold increase compared to the 2,537 employees laid off across 32 companies during the same period last year.

The scale of workforce reductions in the tech industry peaked at 264,320 in 2023, then declined to 152,922 in 2024 and 124,201 last year. However, the number increased significantly in January of this year due to the advancement of AI technology.

As AI, including ChatGPT and Gemini, rapidly permeates our daily lives and triggers social change, the need for workforce restructuring, particularly among big tech companies, is growing, and concerns are growing among workers at related companies.

Antropic's AI tool, "Claude Cowork," has signaled the beginning of a full-blown restructuring of tech companies. Speculation that Claude Cowork, an "execution agent," could replace enterprise software has spread, leading to a sharp drop in the stock prices of software-related companies like Microsoft (MS), Salesforce, and Oracle on the New York Stock Exchange in recent weeks.

As AI replaces developers in tasks like programming code, a growing number of tech companies are significantly reducing hiring of new developers or restructuring their workforce. A domestic IT industry representative stated, "It's true that the rapid advancement of AI tools has significantly reduced the need for entry-level developers," adding, "Some companies are responding to this change by reducing the size and staffing of business units facing significant uncertainty."

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.” (Luke 4:18-19)

God, we hear that with the revolutionary advancement of artificial intelligence (AI), over 20,000 employees were laid off in January alone, primarily at big tech companies, and this number has surged tenfold compared to last year.

As we now face a major societal shift where artificial intelligence surpasses human skills and replaces humans, grant us, Christians living in the last days, not to fear, but rather to stand boldly before the cross, discerning how to view and respond to this era.

Moreover, as many people abandon communication with one another and rely on rapidly advancing technology to live, make the global church one that unites even more through Christ's love and proclaims God's Word.

In this age of great tribulation rushing toward its end, may the global church discern the times through God's Word and, filled with the Holy Spirit, fulfill its missionary mandate to the very end—proclaiming the Gospel to all nations, freedom to the captives, and liberty to the oppressed! May the Gospel of our Lord Jesus be witnessed to all peoples to the ends of the earth!

Thus, may all nations become those who welcome the eternal salvation and year of grace of Jesus Christ, the true Truth, and may they meet the day of the Lord's swift return!
