[Today's Prayer] "Syria, SOS to Turkey after Sectarian Conflict Bloodshed"

The Associated Press reported on the 23rd (local time) that the Syrian interim government has requested support from neighboring Turkey after the recent large-scale bloodshed triggered by sectarian conflict between the Druze and Bedouin in the southern Sweida region.

According to Turkish defense officials, Syria has asked Turkey to help fight terrorist organizations including the Islamic State (IS).

They stated that "Turkey is trying to provide training, advice, and technical assistance to strengthen Syria's defense capabilities." The Syrian side did not respond to questions about this, the AP reported.

If it is true that Syria requested support, the possibility of Turkey's military intervention is expected to increase further. The AP explained that Turkey is pursuing a defense agreement that would allow it to create a base in Syria and station its troops.

The previous day, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that any attempt to create division and instability through violence in Syria would be considered a direct threat to (Turkey’s) national security and that he would intervene.

Fidan also criticized Israel for its airstrikes on the Syrian Defense Ministry under the pretext of protecting the Druze in Syria, saying, “Israel does not want a stable state in its neighborhood and is trying to divide Syria.” (omitted)
