[Today's Prayer] Sudden Floods in Indian Himalayan Village… 4 Dead, Over 100 Missing

Four people have died and around 100 are missing after a sudden flood in a Himalayan village in northern India.

According to AFP and the British daily The Guardian, on the 5th (local time), a torrent of muddy water poured down a ravine into low-lying areas in the village of Dharali, near the Himalayas in northern India's Uttarakhand state, causing the flood.

The torrent swept down a narrow mountain valley, engulfing villages on the plains. Four people were killed and over 100 others are missing.

Local media reported scenes of powerful, muddy water engulfing entire housing complexes and residents rushing to escape the floodwaters.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that rescue personnel were deployed on a statewide alert.

Images released by the Indian military showed villages submerged in mud, with muddy waters covering the roofs of houses.

Arpan Yaduvanshi, commander of the Uttarakhand Disaster Response Force, said mud had piled up to 15 meters in some areas, completely engulfing buildings.

AFP reported that the flooding was caused by a so-called "cloudburst," a type of extremely heavy rainfall concentrated over a small area in a short period of time.

The India Meteorological Department said some areas in Uttarakhand, which had issued a red alert, recorded up to 21 centimeters of rainfall, which is considered very heavy.
