[Today's Prayer] Residents Armed with a Weapon Threaten to Stop Christian Worship in Indonesia… Controversy Over Closure of Place of Worship

In the Rajeg area of Tangerang Regency, Banten Province, Indonesia, an incident occurred in which residents interrupted a Christian worship service, during which one man threatened those present with a bladed weapon.
Christian Daily International (CDI), a Christian media outlet, reported on the 6th, citing Morning Star News, that a worship service was interrupted on September 20 at a worship site belonging to the Indonesian Protestant Church (GKPI) in Mekarsari village. At the time, approximately 40 believers were attending the service, and several residents reportedly arrived at the scene and demanded that the worship service be stopped.

According to local reports, the conflict stemmed from residents' objections regarding the permits for the place of worship. GKPI had reportedly been holding worship services at the location for approximately four years and had received registration-related documents from the local office of the Ministry of Religious Affairs. An official from Indonesia's Ministry of Religious Affairs also expressed regret, stating, "Interfering with worship activities may constitute a criminal offense."

However, the issue of closing the place of worship resurfaced afterward. The regent of Tangerang closed the worship site, citing that the location was too small and unsuitable for the number of congregation members. As a result, the believers reportedly began holding worship services in their individual homes after September 27.
Human rights and religious freedom organizations in Indonesia also expressed concern over the disruption of worship. Setara Institute stated, "Violence or threats cannot be used as a means of resolving administrative issues related to religious freedom." Amnesty International Indonesia also called for legal proceedings, stating that "ending the incident through mediation alone could send the wrong message that people can avoid legal responsibility for obstructing religious activities."
The Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) also condemned the interruption of the worship service and called for legal action against the resident who threatened the congregation with a bladed weapon.

"I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus." (Philippians 3:14)
God, we hear the news of an incident at a church in Indonesia where residents interrupted a worship service, and one man threatened the believers who were worshiping there with a bladed weapon.
Have compassion on the situation in Indonesia, where places of worship are being closed on the grounds that they are too small and unsuitable for the number of congregation members. Comfort the Christians in Indonesia who are facing persecution and threats from local residents, even though their church has been officially registered.
Pour out Your wisdom upon Indonesia's leaders and government authorities so that the members of Indonesian churches and their places of worship may be protected, and so that the nation may be governed according to Your righteousness.
Furthermore, may the churches in Indonesia strive to gather together even amid persecution and never cease proclaiming the gospel. May they transform the spiritual atmosphere of Indonesia and become churches that proclaim the gospel of the Kingdom of Heaven to all nations.
As the global church unites in prayer for this, may an army of faith arise in Indonesia, pressing on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called them heavenward in Christ Jesus!
