As the Afghan Taliban regime launched a large-scale offensive in the border region of Pakistan on the 26th (local time), the Pakistani military retaliated, leading to a major armed conflict between the two countries just four months after a ceasefire.
According to reports from the British daily Guardian, BBC, and AFP, a spokesperson for the Afghan Taliban government issued a statement on this day announcing, "Starting from 8:00 PM, we have launched a large-scale offensive at several points along the Pakistani border, including Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province."
The spokesperson claimed, "We carried out attacks targeting military bases and facilities in response to the Pakistani military's repeated territorial violations and provocations. In just two hours, we captured 15 Pakistani border posts, killed dozens, and captured many prisoners."
This attack is a retaliatory move against Pakistan's airstrikes on the 22nd, which targeted seven locations along the Afghan border, including strongholds and hideouts of the extremist militant groups Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and ISIS-Khorasan (ISIS-K). At that time, the Taliban claimed that 18 civilians were killed.
In response to the Afghan attack, Pakistan immediately launched a military counter-response. They carried out air and ground attacks using firearms, artillery, and attack drones against Taliban posts, headquarters, and ammunition depots along the border.
The Afghan Ministry of Defense stated that 55 Pakistani soldiers were killed in the border clashes and some were taken to Afghanistan as prisoners. They also claimed that 8 Afghan soldiers were killed and 11 were injured, while 19 Pakistani border posts and 2 bases were destroyed.
However, a spokesperson for the Pakistani Prime Minister denied the Afghan claim that Pakistani soldiers had been captured. The Pakistani government claimed that its strikes on the Afghan capital Kabul and eastern Paktia province killed 133 Taliban officials and injured more than 200.
Pakistan views this conflict effectively as a war. Pakistani Defense Minister Khawaja Asif said, "Afghanistan has begun to gather terrorists from all over the world and export terrorism. Our patience has run out, and now an open war has begun between us and you (Afghanistan)."
The two countries have long been in conflict over the 'Durand Line,' a disputed 2,600km border. Pakistan has accused the TTP, which masterminds suicide bombings within its borders, of having hideouts in Afghanistan. The Taliban regime denies this and considers Pakistan's airstrikes a violation of sovereignty.
After a clash in October last year resulted in about 70 casualties, countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia stepped in to mediate, but this large-scale retaliatory war raises concerns that tensions between the two countries will intensify again.

Because I delivered the poor who cried out, the fatherless and the one who had no helper. The blessing of the perishing man came upon me, and I caused the widow's heart to sing for joy. (Job 29:12-13)
We hear the sad news that on the 26th, the Afghan Taliban regime launched an offensive in the Pakistani border area in retaliation for Pakistan's airstrikes on the 22nd against seven border locations, including hideouts of two extremist groups. As the Pakistani military also retaliated, the ceasefire has ended and large-scale clashes have resumed.
As the Taliban, who regained power after the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, exerts influence even over Pakistan through the TTP, Lord, please have mercy on the residents of Pakistan and Afghanistan who continue their lives amidst a war originating from Islamic extremism.
Please look after the bereaved families who have lost loved ones to constant explosions and gunfire and find it difficult to make a living. May local churches serve so that shelters can be provided in the Pakistan-Afghanistan border region, where even a moment of peace is not granted.
God, who cares for the poor, the orphan, and the widow, please let the Gospel reach them before the war does. Grant them their daily bread so that no one has to risk their lives in war just to survive. Please bestow heavenly mercy.
To this end, let the global church look more closely into the circumstances of Pakistan and Afghanistan, striving for education and the spread of the Gospel. Lead the souls of Pakistan and Afghanistan to break the curse of continuous retaliation and instead respond with forgiveness upon forgiveness.
Thus, let the love and service of Jesus overflow in Pakistan and Afghanistan, so that all wars may cease. May they become nations that serve the world and sing for joy as brothers and sisters in Christ!
