[Today’s Prayer] Nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees have returned home since December

The number of Syrian refugees returning home since the fall of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government in December of last year has reached nearly 200,000, United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Filippo Grandi announced on the 18th (local time).

In a post on the social media X, Grandi stated that approximately 195,200 Syrian refugees returned home from December 8 of last year to January 16 of this year.

Meanwhile, the number of Syrian refugees who returned home in 2024 announced by UNHCR is over 550,000. Among them, Aleppo Province received the largest number of returnees. It is about 23% of all returning refugees.

Most Syrian refugees overseas are expressing a desire to return home, but according to a UNHCR report released on the 17th, some refugees are still showing a double attitude of skepticism and caution.

Most of the refugees emphasize that they need financial and material assistance to be able to return home, and that they also desperately need support to help them rebuild their homes and lives in Syria after their return.

In response, the UNHCR and partner relief organizations stated that cooperation between each organization and agency is necessary for the return of Syrian refugees. The

UNHCR also stated that sufficient support is needed not only for the refugees but also for the countries accepting them, and that additional funds are needed to help them settle and stabilize with the cooperation and participation of the international community.

“all these now join their fellow Israelites the nobles, and bind themselves with a curse and an oath to follow the Law of God given through Moses the servant of God and to obey carefully all the commands, regulations and decrees of the Lord our Lord.” (Nehemiah 10: 29)

We hear that nearly 200,000 Syrian refugees have returned to their homes since last December.

As Syrian refugees who fled their homes amidst war and hardship now return with the hope of rebuilding their lives, we pray that they will encounter the Lord who will provide the financial and material support they need to make a fresh start.

Give the Syrian refugees the wisdom and strength to make a commitment to You once again in their homeland, just as the Israelites pledged to follow Your laws and commandments in Nehemiah 10:29.

Help them to remember the gospel we heard as refugees and to be those who not only receive help, but restore the Syrian people to you.

Lord, as Syrian refugees rebuild their lives upon returning home, may the international community and the global church work together to help them and gather the resources they need.

Open the way for local Syrian and Arab churches to serve Syrian refugees with the gospel, build communities of faith, and expand your kingdom in the region.

May the Syrian people be raised up as the high priests of the Arab world and sent out as missionaries to the nations, and may they be established as evangelists!
