[Today's Prayer] Lebanese Prime Minister: "2 million Syrian refugees must return"... Sharaa: "We can't solve it all at once"

Updated: Jan 15

Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with Syria's new de facto leader Ahmad al-Sharaa and said that it was urgent to send back Syrian refugees living in Lebanon. However, Sharaa did not respond immediately.

Al Jazeera reported on the 11th (local time) that Prime Minister Mikati visited the Syrian capital Damascus and agreed to cooperate with Sharaa for a "long-term strategic relationship" between the two countries. They agreed to cooperate to establish border security and to define the frequently disputed land and sea borders. The two countries also agreed to establish a committee for cooperation. This is the first visit by a Lebanese Prime Minister to Syria in 15 years since the Syrian civil war broke out in 2011.

Sharaa said in a joint press conference that they discussed not only border issues but also smuggling between the two countries and Syrian deposits in Lebanese banks. During the time of former President Bashar al-Assad, who was supported by Iran, Syrian weapons and drugs were smuggled into Lebanon through the lax border area in eastern Lebanon.

In addition, Prime Minister Mikati said that the return of 2 million Syrian refugees who fled to Lebanon was urgent. However, Sharaa avoided giving an immediate answer regarding the return of these refugees. Sharaa said, “We will not be able to solve all the problems (borders, refugees, etc.) at once. We need to divide the problems and find solutions for each,” and did not suggest an immediate solution, the report said.

Lebanon, a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country, has maintained a unique power-sharing system in which the president, prime minister, and speaker of the National Assembly are elected from each religion and sect while going through a civil war. The president is a Maronite Christian, the prime minister is a Sunni Muslim, and the speaker of the National Assembly is a Shiite Muslim. The president, who serves a six-year term, is elected through an indirect election by members of the National Assembly. However, the presidential election has repeatedly been canceled due to political infighting. There has been no president for two years and six months from May 2014 to October 2016, and another two years and three months since October 2022. In Lebanon, real power is concentrated in the prime minister, but the president has the power to nominate the prime minister. The new president Aoun emphasized that the Lebanese government army will have exclusive use of weapons. This seems to be a statement to check Hezbollah, an armed group with a military force that surpasses the Lebanese government army.

“Then he ordered the crowds to sit down on the grass, and taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing. Then he broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the crowds.” (Matthew 14:19)

God,

Lebanon, Syria, and the entire Middle East are entangled in complex politics and vested interests, and the situation is becoming more chaotic day by day.

In a situation where we cannot even imagine what kind of relationship difficulties will arise between Syria and the countries surrounding Syria, the Syrian refugees who are scattered across each country desperately need Jesus, the true shepherd.

Would you please hold on to the churches in Lebanon and Syria so that they can take the lead and serve the refugees more than anyone else for those who are wandering without a destination!

Rather than being Syrian refugees who live their lives without purpose, please let the Syrian refugees who heard the gospel and met Jesus now have hope in the eternal kingdom of God and restore their identity as those who proclaim the gospel of heaven!

Also, may the two nations of Lebanon and Syria unite as a people who prepare the way for the Lord's return in these chaotic last days, and let the name of Jesus, who performed the work of the five loaves and two fish and fed many, now become a name that feeds eternal life to countless souls of the two nations!

Therefore, with the love that we received without cost, may they rise up as the Lebanese and Syrian peoples who go to other nations, to the ends of the earth, and testify to the glory of our Lord!
