[Today's Prayer] "India Considers Drastically Reducing Water Supply to Pakistan, Reviewing Indus River Project"

Updated: 11 hours ago

It has been reported that the Indian government, which has a ceasefire with Pakistan, is considering a project to drastically reduce the water flowing to Pakistan by diverting a large amount of water from the Indus River tributaries towards India.

According to a Reuters report on the 17th (local time), four sources said that the Indian government is considering this plan as a retaliatory measure against Pakistan.

In this regard, it was reported that after the Indian government recently declared a suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty's validity, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi instructed officials to swiftly proceed with establishing and implementing project plans related to the Indus, Chenab, and Jhelum rivers.

The Indus Waters Treaty was signed in 1960 through the World Bank's mediation to ensure peaceful water usage between India and Pakistan.

Furthermore, the Indian government has decided to nearly quadruple the hydropower capacity in the Jammu and Kashmir region from the current 3,360 megawatts (MW) to 12,000 MW. To achieve this, it has also prepared plans to construct four hydroelectric dams on the Chenab and Jhelum rivers.

In the past, India did not build dams capable of storing such large amounts of water on Pakistan's three rivers due to the restrictions of the Indus Waters Treaty. However, it is reported that India is attempting this for the first time.

Pakistan obtains 80% of its water resources from the Indus River tributaries, so if India actually implements this plan, it is expected to suffer a fatal blow.

Indian media outlet The Times of India (ToI) reported that Pakistan relies on the Indus River tributaries for about 80% of its agricultural production and a significant portion of its hydropower generation. It explained that a significant reduction in water flow could severely impact Pakistan's food security, economy, and energy supply.

In your righteousness deliver me and rescue me; incline your ear to me, and save me! Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; you have given the command to save me, for you are my rock and2 my fortress. (Psalm 71:2-3)

Loving God, we hear the news that the Indian government is considering diverting water from the Indus River tributaries to their own country, reducing the water supply to Pakistan.

You know the situation where a treaty established for mutual survival and peace is being broken, and even the river water that should be shared is being used as a means of retaliation.

Lord, please thwart the cruel actions of the Indian government that are antagonizing Pakistan by taking the water, the most essential element for human life, hostage. Be the daily sustenance and unfailing spring for the souls in Pakistan who have established their lives along the Indus River.

Lord, You are the rock of refuge and the everlasting fortress for both India and Pakistan. May the people of India and Pakistan take refuge in You alone, and may a river of salvation flow when they come before You.

Creator God, who made heaven and earth, grant India and Pakistan the wisdom to realize that You have given sunshine and rain equally to all humanity. May they no longer commit the foolishness of waging war over territory and rivers.

Lord, in the midst of this conflict, may the churches in India and Pakistan be the first to forgive each other and become one in You, transcending ethnicity and borders in prayer. May the church stand as a mediator for the nations, opening the way for reconciliation and proclaiming the gospel of Jesus Christ towards the Kingdom of God.

We also pray that churches worldwide will join in prayer for this situation. May the gospel be preached among the souls of India and Pakistan, and may they witness to Jehovah God, the Creator of the Kashmir territory and the Indus River.

So that the river of the gospel may flow throughout India and Pakistan, bringing the grace of rebirth, and may the million missionaries from India and the hundred thousand missionaries from Pakistan together serve the nations along the Asian Highway!
