[Today's Prayer] Heavy Rainfall Kills 10 in Kolkata, Eastern India... Heaviest Rainfall in 39 Years

Ten people have died in Kolkata, eastern India, following the heaviest rainfall in 39 years.

According to China's state-run Xinhua News Agency on the 24th (local time), heavy rains continued for two days, starting on the 22nd, killing 10 people in Kolkata, the capital of the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.

Nine of those deaths were attributed to electrocution caused by flooding.

The heavy rain, which began on the night of the 22nd, continued until the following morning, flooding much of Kolkata.

Roads were waist-deep in water, and vehicles were stuck at major intersections for hours.

Furthermore, subway services within the city and trains connecting outlying cities were disrupted, and damage continued, including flooding of homes in low-lying areas. Due to the heavy rain, 62 flights were canceled and 42 were delayed.

According to the India Meteorological Department, Kolkata received 251.4 millimeters of rain in less than a day, the highest since 1986, Xinhua reported.

It is also the sixth-highest daily rainfall in Kolkata's 137-year history.

In South Asian countries, including India and Pakistan, the monsoon season lasts from June to September each year.

While the rains during this period provide relief from the intense heat and aid in crop cultivation, the poor drainage and sewage systems in South Asian countries also lead to widespread casualties.

Recently, in Pakistan, heavy rains and floods have killed approximately 1,000 people and completely destroyed 4,128 homes since the start of the monsoon season in late June.
