As heavy rains continue in Vietnam, hit by super typhoon 'Yagi', the number of deaths and missing people is approaching 300.

The water level of the Red River flowing through the capital Hanoi has risen to its highest level in 20 years, causing flooding in many parts of Hanoi and forcing residents to evacuate.

According to Reuters on the 11th (local time), the Vietnamese government provisionally counted that at least 155 people had died and 141 were missing since Typhoon Yagi made landfall in Vietnam on the 7th.

A landslide occurred in the mountainous region of northern Lao Cai province on that day, covering the small village of Lang Nu. About 10 people were rescued from the scene, but 22 were found dead and about 70 people were missing, the Associated Press reported, citing Vietnam's state-run VTV broadcaster.

City authorities deployed police, military, and volunteers to the area to help residents evacuate. Police officers walked along the river or rode boats to each house to check if households had evacuated.

“The rain has been so heavy and the water level is rising quickly,” a police officer told AFP. “Everyone must evacuate.”

In addition, as several roads in the city were flooded, traffic was congested on roads that were not flooded, and long lines of cars formed hundreds of meters long in many places, causing severe traffic congestion throughout the day.
