[Today’s Prayer] France becomes the first country in the world to specify abortion freedom in its constitution

On the 4th (local time), the French Parliament approved a constitutional amendment specifying women's freedom to have abortions. As a result, France became the first country in the world to enshrine the ‘guarantee of freedom to have an abortion’ in its constitution.

The French Senate and House of Representatives voted on the constitutional amendment at a joint meeting held at the Palace of Versailles on this day and passed it with 780 votes in favor and 72 against. At this meeting, 902 out of 925 lawmakers attended, and 50 people, including Senate President Gerard Laschet, who opposed the constitutional amendment, abstained.

To pass a constitutional amendment at a joint session of both houses, more than three-fifths of the valid votes (852) must be in favor, but on this day, the number of votes in favor was far more than the quorum of 512. Marine Le Pen, a member of the far-right party National Coalition (RN), also voted in favor.

Following the constitutional amendment, a clause was added to Article 34 of the French Constitution: “The conditions under which women’s freedom to voluntarily terminate their pregnancies are guaranteed by law.” Abortion has been allowed in France since 1975, and no substantial changes have been made with this constitutional amendment.

Shortly after the announcement of the results of the vote, President Emmanuel Macron said on (X former Twitter), "France's pride, a message to the world," adding, "We will publicly hold a constitutional state seal ceremony on World Women's Day on the 8th to celebrate."

On this day, 550 people opposed to abortion gathered near the Palace of Versailles and held a protest against constitutional amendments.

France has been pushing for a bill to specify the right to abortion in the constitution in June 2022, after the U.S. Supreme Court abolished the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that allowed abortion up to about 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Although people ignore God's law and everyone lives only for themselves, we believe that everyone will stand before the Lord's judgment seat at the end times.

God, in this age where people say it is okay to kill young lives for one's own freedom, we desire to be more awake and proclaim your truth.

Let people fear God, cover their consciences with the blood of Jesus Christ, and help them realize the love of Jesus who gave his life to save us from sin.
