It has been revealed that Bangladeshi Christians are living in extreme anxiety and fear before and after the February 12 general election. The recent increase in Islamist violence and the possibility of implementing Sharia law nationwide have raised concerns about the survival of religious minorities.
The situation of Christians has deteriorated sharply since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024. Hasina was criticized for her authoritarian rule and allegations of corruption and favoritism during her 15-year term, but she also maintained a hardline policy against Islamist forces and provided some protection for religious minorities. However, since her ouster, Christians and Hindus, especially those who have converted from Islam, have become the main targets of violence.
A local pastor said, "Christians are now living in fear. Many churches were attacked and destroyed when Hasina was ousted, and Christian homes were also damaged. Since then, violence has increased, and fear has spread among our people." He continued, "We pray for God's protection in this difficult time. We want to live peacefully in the land God has given us and be treated as equal citizens."
Another Christian convert testified, "Christians are often attacked as supporters of Hasina's Awami League, which is led by Hasina." Some church leaders have received direct threats from representatives of the BNP and Islamist parties.

You who were called out of darkness into the light of the Lord, and who have obeyed the gospel, are sanctified by the Spirit of our God. For you were called to freedom, brethren; only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." (Galatians 5:22-25)
We hear the sad news that since the general election in Bangladesh on February 12, Islamist violence has increased and the possibility of implementing Sharia law nationwide has been raised. Bangladeshi Christians and those who have converted from Islam are being directly threatened by representatives of the BNP and Islamist parties.
Especially since the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2024, the threats have intensified. We pray that the Lord will protect our Bangladeshi brothers and sisters and lead a new leader who will govern Bangladesh with the Word of God.
Bangladeshi Hindus are also going through the same hardships. We pray that the church in Bangladesh will serve first and share the gospel, so that we can all rejoice in Jesus Christ, who has sanctified us with His righteousness and salvation.
May the global church assist and raise our voices against the persecution in Bangladesh and dedicate ourselves to mission, so that the gospel of salvation may soon be witnessed in Bangladesh.
May the Kingdom of God come to Bangladesh and may the nation be governed by the righteousness of Jesus Christ, proclaiming His law to all nations.
