[Today’s Prayer] A ‘Double Whammy’ Due to the Cold Wave and Aftershocks… Chinese Gansu Earthquake Rescue Team Fights for Victims
Rescue operations related to the earthquake in Gansu Province, northwest China, are experiencing difficulties due to cold weather.
Some say that casualties may increase as hundreds of aftershocks continue.
According to China's Central Meteorological Observatory, on the 20th, the highest temperature in Jishishan County of Linxia Hui, Gansu Province, where a magnitude 6.2 earthquake occurred, recorded -2 degrees Celsius the day before, and dropped to - 14 degrees Celsius at night.
Chinese authorities are deploying more than 4,000 firefighters, police, and soldiers to conduct rescue operations, but local media reports that the cold weather is the biggest obstacle.
They need to use equipment to dig through the wreckage to find survivors, but as the cold surge continues, it is inevitable that work time will be shortened.
The Feng Fai newspaper said, “Weather conditions are making it difficult for rescuers and residents,” and “the situation on the ground is very difficult.”
The central and local governments are continuously putting in reserve funds, including China's National Development and Reform Commission, which invested 250 million yuan (about 45.5 billion won) the day before, but it is not enough as the scale of damage is so massive.
In particular, it is said that many residents did not even have a proper jacket because they were shocked by the earthquake in the middle of the night and evacuated in their pajamas.
Experts are also concerned about the shortening of the 'golden time' due to the cold surge.
Wang Tun, director of Chengdu Natural Disaster Research Institute, advised, "The golden time for an earthquake is 72 hours, but this earthquake is expected to be significantly shortened due to the cold weather. Rescue workers should wear winter clothing well and speed up rescue work."
He emphasized, “It is also an important task to warmly protect residents who have rushed out of their homes.”

Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)
Our God is the Lord and King of the whole world and all nations. We believe that He is fulfilling and accomplishing the written word of God.
At a time when the ground is shaking everywhere due to earthquakes, yesterday we heard news of an earthquake in China and the deaths of many people.
The difficulty in rescue work is due to the bitter cold weather, which is also leading to a shortening of the golden time.
Lord, please have mercy on the people of this land.
In the face of disaster, they spend a tremendous amount of money for rescue work, but the sovereignty over life belongs only to you. May the power of death come to an end and let God's work of resurrection and life begin on this land.
Those who are shocked and have lost much need Jesus.
The world church joins together in prayer, please send someone who will go beyond the food and rescue they need and spread the gospel of salvation that will lead them to life.
Let China's tightly closed doors open wide so that many may enter in to share the eternal kingdom of God and the name of Jesus, which is the resurrection and life that the poor and thirsty souls need.
God, may you work in this place that is full of sorrow and pain, so that it may become a land of miracles where a million Chinese armies rise up.
