[Today’s Prayer] 2.2 million Gaza residents starve after 56 days of Israeli blockade

Since the end of the ceasefire on March 1, international relief supplies such as food, fuel, and medical supplies have not been able to enter the Gaza Strip for nearly 60 days due to Israel's blockade.

Relief organizations are running out of food to distribute, and the markets are emptying. Palestinian residents are trying their best to keep their children from starving. A

long refugee camp stretches out near Khan Yunis in the south. One family living there boils four cans of beans and carrots in a pot over a wood fire. They add a little bouillon and seasoning, and then serve a plate of rice as their only meal on Fridays for a family of 11. There are six children in the family.

Before the war, Fridays were holy days when extended families would gather to eat stuffed meats and other delicious traditional dishes, refugees say.

“Now we eat beans and rice,” they say. Before the war, they say, they never ate canned beans.

Nearly 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza eat canned vegetables, rice, pasta and lentils as their staple diet. Meat, milk, cheese and fruit have disappeared. Bread and eggs are scarce. What little vegetables do exist in the markets are so expensive that most people cannot afford them. “There is no food that provides protein or nutrients,” they say.

Israel imposed a relief blockade on March 2, the day after the ceasefire ended, and resumed ground military operations on March 18. While it says it is a measure to force Hamas to release the hostages, human rights groups have condemned the relief blockade as a war crime, calling it a “starvation tactic” targeting the entire population.

According to Palestinian women, meat became unavailable and they had to rely on canned sardines, which have also disappeared. The UN authorities distributed milk cartons, but they ended weeks ago. Even families who used to make tomato salad for their children once a week can no longer get tomatoes.

“Hear my prayer, Lord listen to my cry for help; do not be deaf to my weeping. I dwell with you as a foreigner, a stranger, as all my ancestors were. Look away from me, that I may enjoy life again before I depart and am no more.” (Psalm 39:12-13)

Residents of Gaza, Palestine, are reportedly starving after an Israeli blockade prevented international aid from entering for 60 days following the end of a ceasefire on March 1.

The 2.3 million Palestinian Gazans have no access to food that provides protein or nutrients, and the UN agency's distribution of milk cartons was cut off weeks ago, leaving them without a proper meal.
