There are reports that Ramzan Kadyrov (48), who has ruled the Chechen Republic in southern Russia with an iron fist for 20 years, is in a terminal state. There are predictions that the direction of Chechnya will be a major turning point as Kadyrov, who was called Russian President Vladimir Putin’s ‘right-hand man’ or ‘loyal dog,’ is in a life-or-death situation.

On the 4th (local time), the Russian independent media Novaya Gazeta Europe reported that Ramzan Kadyrov has been given a terminal diagnosis due to pancreatic necrosis.

Pancreatic necrosis is a fatal disease in which pancreatic cells die and lead to multiple organ failure. Kadyrov suffered from this disease since 2019, and was admitted to the intensive care unit in September 2023 with acute pulmonary failure. He was dependent on a ventilator for over a year and a half after that.

Novaya Gazeta reported that “Kadyrov’s health deteriorated to the point that he could not attend the memorial service for the forced deportation of Chechens during the Stalin era in February of this year,” and that “he was unable to send a congratulatory message for the end of Ramadan, which he had never missed for 20 years, for the first time in March of this year.”

The death sentence of the relatively young dictator at the age of 48 foreshadowed the huge aftershocks that would soon follow.

On the 4th, the New York Times (NYT) reported that Kadyrov was rushing to pass power to the third generation in order to pass it on to the third of his four sons, Adam (17).

Kadyrov inherited power from his father, Akhmat Kadyrov, who was assassinated in 2004. The most important task for Kadyrov is the future succession of power to his son, who will succeed him and become the third generation of the regime.

Chechnya is an autonomous republic of Islamic culture located in the North Caucasus Mountains in southern Russia. It declared independence after the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, but Russia ignored this demand.
