An earthquake of magnitude 6.0 in eastern Afghanistan has left 622 people dead and 1,555 injured, according to the Afghan Ministry of Interior.

According to Reuters and AFP, Abdul Matin Qani, spokesperson for the Ministry of Interior, stated that the quake, which struck around midnight, killed "610 people in Kunar Province and injured 1,300," adding that "12 people lost their lives and 255 were injured in Nangarhar Province."

Earlier that night, around midnight, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck Kunar Province, a mountainous area on the border with Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. As a result, three villages in Kunar Province were completely destroyed, and many other villages suffered significant damage.

Authorities are currently conducting rescue operations, demolishing mud-and-stone houses in several mountainous areas to search for survivors.

So far, about 622 people have lost their lives and more than 1,500 have been injured, authorities reported.

However, since numerous reports of injuries have also been received from remote areas with poor road conditions, the overall number of casualties is expected to rise.

The Hindu Kush Mountains in Afghanistan are an area where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, causing frequent and deadly earthquakes. Last year, more than 1,000 people were killed in a quake in western Afghanistan.

Kunar and Nangarhar Provinces are classified as rugged regions repeatedly hit by earthquakes and floods.

"My soul, why are you downcast? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God." (Psalm 42:11)

God, we hear the heartbreaking news that a massive earthquake in eastern Afghanistan has killed more than 600 people and injured more than a thousand.

Lord, in this painful situation where earthquakes and floods repeat in Afghanistan, and where souls perish helplessly, please have mercy on them.

At this time, when so many souls have died and the weight of death feels overwhelming, may there be a great reversal—may the despairing souls come to know who the true Savior is, our God!

O God who is the help of our countenance, let us praise You alone, and may countless souls in Afghanistan turn to You in grace!

Also, visit the grieving families who have lost loved ones and are wandering in sorrow, and grant that their souls may meet Jesus Christ, the true Savior, find peace, and no longer suffer fear or pain.

May the sorrow in Afghanistan come to an end, and may the sound of praise to God fill the entire land!
