Mauritania is one of the world’s four largest Islamic republics. It is a very conservative Islamic religious state that does not recognize freedom of religion and enforces the Islamic law called the Shariah law.
The government has announced that 100% of the population is Sunni Islam, legally prohibiting evangelism and the spread of other religions. As a result, Christians who converted from Islam are being persecuted.
Due to the recent COVID-19 outbreak, for more than two months the government has enforced the closure of airports and borders and banned travel between cities. In addition, all meetings have been prohibited and all schools and businesses have been closed except for supermarkets. Also, during Ramadan an 11pm traffic curfew has been instated.
The government has prepared an unprecedented temporary budget and countermeasures to prevent the spread of COVID-19. However, people are well aware of their extremely poor medical condition and have distrust and fear towards the government’s actions. As a result, it has been very difficult for missionaries to disciple or have fellowship with souls they had been serving, since these souls self-isolate at home and have been reluctant to meet.
To make the situation worse, news of missionaries preaching the gospel last winter was published in local internet articles, triggering police investigations. Currently, there is an order for missionaries who were involved in evangelism to be deported.
Around the same time in February, while a dozen locals were holding a worship service, one of the attendees reported it to the police and they were all imprisoned.
Despite these difficulties, God is faithfully carrying out the history of the Kingdom of God in Mauritania! In the past few years, an unprecedented number of foreigners have been flocking to Mauritania. Multiethnic mission teams in particular, have been constantly visiting to harvest the ripened fruits of Mauritania. In addition, mission training is being conducted through churches established by people of faith from other African countries. They are carrying the flag of the gospel and advancing throughout Mauritania and all nations. Hallelujah! New African armies of God are rising up in Mauritania!
But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven. Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. (Hebrews 10:32-35)
Hallelujah! God is doing new things in the land of Mauritania! The young generation of Mauritanians and Africans who know the dreams and visions of the Kingdom of God and who have received the light of life of Jesus Christ, will confidently overcome a great struggle with sufferings! An army of light that leads souls to Jesus Christ the King of salvation, will surely arise as true disciples of Jesus Christ!
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
Amen! In all circumstances, Mauritanian souls will come to Jesus with a heart thirsting for the truth. They will come to Jesus Christ who is the way, the truth, and the life. They will be freed from the darkness and falsity of Islam and will arise as followers of Jesus Christ, who will light their paths!
Lord! May Mauritanian churches that the gates of Hades cannot prevail against, be planted! May disciples of Jesus Christ who endure to the end without fear of any suffering, rise up!
1. God, we pray that Your kingdom will continue to be proclaimed in Mauritania through local Christians, ministers and multiethnic teams during Ramadan! May Mauritanian souls be freed from the darkness of Islamic religion and follow Jesus Christ, the Light! May the gospel be like the living water in the midst of the Sahara desert and raise up souls who will commit for the kingdom of God shining the light on the nations!
2. Lord! May African churches planted in Mauritania endure and be victorious to the end regardless any reproaches and tribulations they may face. Lord, let them be the powerful churches that bring souls back to You! May these African churches to deliver the powerful light of life to Mauritania! We pray that holy churches will be raised up to joyfully commit their lives for the evangelization of Mauritania and the nations! May the Mauritanian Church prepare the way for Jesus Christ to come again to the ends of the earth!
