[Today’s Prayer] Kurds Feel Betrayed by the US, Call Withdrawal a “Stab in the Back”…Many Begin to Flee Region

Syrian Kurds are censuring the USA’s White House statement that they will not get involved in the Turkish military offensive against Kurdish fighters in northeastern Syria, calling it connivance and betrayal.

There has been news already that the withdrawal of the US military from the Northeastern part of Syria has started a “mass exodus” across the borders.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which mainly consists of Kurdish fighters called “People’s Protection Units” (YPG), condemned the US, saying, The US promised several times to ban Turkish military operations in this area,” and, “The White House statement is a stab in the back.”

Syrian Kurds expressed concern that the US’s decision is not only unjust as a betrayal to them, but it also will send this region back into chaos. The US has until now been an active ally and supporter of Kurdish forces in this region.

Some Kurdish dignitaries are putting hope in the possibility that US President Donald Trump might have a change of heart and retract this statement. Last year, Trump went back on his former statement that there will be a full withdrawal of US forces from Syria because of strong resistance from in and outside of the US.

“Maybe the situation could still change,” said Badran Jia Kurd, a senior Kurdish official, with anticipation. “We believe it is not too late for the decision to change.”

It has been reported that residents of Northeast Syria have started to flee across the borders.

According to British news agency The Times, Majd, a resident of Tell Abyad, a town in Northeastern Syria, said, “People have begun leaving to seek refuge elsewhere already, and those who have relatives in neighboring areas are moving first.

“The streets are nearly empty now,” he added.

US’s allies as well as the international community have been venting their concerns and criticisms against Turkish military operations and the withdrawal of the US military from Northeastern Syria.

An unnamed UN spokesman reported that António Guterres, the UN secretary general, pressed that civilians and civilian institutes must be protected and humanitarian aid maintained no matter what.

For the LORD will not reject his people; he will never forsake his inheritance. Judgment will again be founded on righteousness, and all the upright in heart will follow it.

(Psalm 94:14-15)

God, we have heard that the Kurds, who have been taken advantage of by powers and betrayed by other nations for thousands of years, are facing yet another betrayal, and are now left to fight for themselves.

Even amidst this continuous history of war, which seems like it will never end, God, you are the one who sustains this nation, not the aid from other countries. You created Heaven and Earth, and you never forsake your inheritance, from the beginning even to the very end!

God, would you quench all war and fighting, and not reject your people! Would you destroy the enemy’s schemes, which are leading men to war and bloodshed out of anger and bitterness.

Lord, even in this moment, you are accomplishing your words for this nation, and raising up your holy army that is dedicated to you.

Raise up those who only hold on to you, even in the uncertainty of war. Lord, would you come to them, you, the one who loves this nation! This land will only be plagued by hatred and anger until they come upon the truth of your love, that you gave your only Son! Let your kingdom gospel spread even more rapidly in this time! Amen!
